California’s Vintage 2015: „Low but Promising“

USA (California) – California Wines, an association of over 1,000 Californian wine estates and wine business companies, called the 2015 wine harvest “low and promising”. A warm springtime, which started earlier than usual, was in the end followed by one of the earliest harvests of this century. But as the weather conditions during the blooming period were unfavorable in diverse sub-regions, it became clear early that low yields were inevitable.

Explosive Forest Fires Devastate Lake County

USA (California) – In the north of California Mother Nature was once again merciless. Most recently, a particularly devastating conflagration burnt hundreds of houses and did not even spare wine growing areas – the areas affected were the edges of Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. In Lake County, about 20,000 persons had to be evacuated. About 27,000 hectares, vineyards included, were devastated, and just under 600 houses were burnt. More than 2,300 firemen were busy to clear a wire way was all they could do. What helped them were two or three days of cooler weather.

Earthquake Strikes Chile’s Wine Region

CHILE (Coquimbo) – The earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 and its epicenter about 30 miles west of the city of Coquimbo off the shore forced over one million people to leave their houses – at least eight persons are said to be killed. Another 14 aftershocks along the Chilean coasts were even noticeable on Argentina’s Atlantic coast. The region around Coquimbo was declared a disaster area by the government, even though a tsunami with waves of over 4.5 meters flooded the coast and the hinterland. Michelle Bachelet, the Chilean president, asked the army for help and sent it to the region affected. First, fears were growing that the wine cellars in this region had been damaged, too, but recent reports weakened them again.
