GERMANY (FRANKFURT) - For the 14th time, Lufthansa is offering wines from Rhineland- Palatinate, amongst others in the First and Business Class, in this year. To make a selection among the many good wines, a competition is being announced again. Hendrik Hering, minister for viticulture, calls on all winemakers in Rhineland- Palatinate to participate in the competition "Wine tasting above the clouds".
After a blind tasting, an independent expert- jury will decide about which wines flight guests will be served above the clouds in 2009 and 2010. The results will be announced in spring. The term of application and the deadline will end on February 18th, 2009. With 250,000 bottles, the required amount of wines is enormous.
Lufthansa asks for wines with the following criteria:
- * noble sweet white wine of the 2007/2008 vintage, at least "Auslese" and 100g/l RZ. The minimum quantity amounts 3,000 bottles (each with 0,375 or 0,5l), served in the F- Class (sample A 01).
- * Dry Riesling, comparable to Spätlese quality, 2008 vintage, from the wine-growing regions Mosel, Nahe or Mittelrhein. Altogether, 40,000 to 80,000 bottles (each with 0,75l) are wanted, served in the Business Class Europe - (sample B 02).
- * Dry red wine, comparable to Spätlese quality 2008 vintage, winegrowing regions Rhine- Hesse, Palatinate, Ahr. Grape variety: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Frühburgunder or Cuveé with at least 50% of Burgundy share. The minimum quantity amounts 50,000 to 80,000 bottles (each with 0,75l), served in the C- class (sample C 03).
The stated minimum quantities have to be available by all means. The winemakers are being asked to sent two sample bottles per offer. Furthermore, they are being asked to sent their completed form of tender to the Staatliche Weindomäne Oppenheim, at the hands of Mrs. Dagmar Bieser, Wormerser Straße 111, 55272 Oppenheim by February 18th, 2009.
