Wine Country of Moldova Re-invents Itself

MOLDOVA (Chișinău) – The small country in east Europe has considerably upgraded, not to say completely re-invented its wine industry. During the past five years alone, the EU and other international organizations invested about 750 million euro in vineyards, wine cellar equipment, and marketing in the small republic. Thanks to this enormous investments and international support, the vintners are meanwhile in a position to work with up to date technology. Moreover, the Moldavian vintners have found their original terroir, which makes their blends out of international and above all their autochthone varieties, like Viorica, Rara Neagra, Feteasca, Neagra, Feteasca Alba, and Feteasca Regala individual wines.

Salta – Highest Vineyards in the World

ARGENTINA (Salta) – Vines growing at very high altitudes and yielding usable grapes are not as rare as some people might think, even though this mostly requires huge efforts. Europe’s highest situated wine zone is found at an altitude of 1,800 meter above sea level, on the island of Tenerife, Spain. It is followed by the Aosta valley, Italy, with altitudes of about 1,200 meter, followed by the Valais, Switzerland, and Epirus, Greece, with about 1,100 meter, Sicily with about 900 meter, Levante (Spain), and Eisacktal (Italy) with about 800 meter each, followed by Styria (Austria) with about 650 meter. All of them are pretty high but not very impressing.

Australian Vintners Conquer Moroccan Wine Market

AUSTRALIA (Coonawara) Coonawara, Australia’s wine region (due to the red limestone soils aka „Terra Rossa“), where preliminarily grape varieties like Sauvignon blanc and Syrah are grown, is where winemaker Gavin Hogg is working. Together with business partners, he secured himself a license to import alcohol to the Islam-oriented kingdom of Morocco. Yes, your eyes do not deceive you – a license to sell alcohol. They already rented a storehouse in Morocco, and they agreed by contract to collaborate with two regional distributors. In March, the next container with Hogg’s wines will go on its sea voyage to Morocco.
