GERMANY (Geisenheim) - The German minister for research and education, Dr. Annette Schavan, visited the Campus Geisenheim at Klaus-Peter Willsch's (MdB Rhinegau-Taunus-area) invitation in order to get a picture of the power spectrum there. With a visit of the company Erbslöh Geisenheim AG afterwards, the minister completed her impression that research and education are very impressively connected with the power of innovation of the economy in Geisenheim.

Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, director of the research department Geisenheim, thought of the visit of the minister as proof that Geisenheim has a good reputation nationwide. Only two weeks ago, Direktor Schultz presented a support check of more than 1 million euro from the Hesse department of science and arts. This money was directed to the Geisenheim-project "FACE (free carbon dioxide enrichment) for special cultures".

The director explained the current state of the research developments in the viniculture and horticulture at Geisenheim Campus, particularly also in view of the further development of the international connection of Geisenheim. However, he also mentioned problems like the impending closure of the field office of the German weather service.

Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Detlev Reymann, president of the college Wiesbaden, introduced his college, which -from August 1st 2009 on- will bear the name "Hochschule RheinMain - University of applied sciences Wiesbaden - Rüsselsheim - Geisenheim".

Prof. Dr. Otmar Löhnertz, dean of the faculty Geisenheim, then introduced the courses in Geisenheim. "With more than 600 studens in the viniculture classes we are at the lead in Germany. The award of the Vinifera- (oenology)-master major (we reported) also emphasizes Geisenheim's ability of development", explained Prof. Dr. Löhnartz.

The dean particularly stressed the successful doctoral college, which was at the top among other German colleges and which was initiated by the Hesse department of science and arts (HMWK) in cooperation with various national and international universities in close cooperation with the research department Geisenheim.

The dean was closely listened to also by the Rhinegau TOP vintagers Dr. Rowald Hepp, winery director Schloss Vollrads and scientific adviser of the research department Geisenheim, Walter Bibo, Schloss Reinhartshausen and Christian Witte Schloss Johannisberg, since years ago all three of them studied at Geisenheim themselves. Klaus-Peter Keßler, President of the Rhinegau wine association, was very happy about the full program in Geisenheim.

At the end, the minister was shown the new central laboratory and institution building, where scientists introduce their current research projects on posters, view new rooms for the students or where the faculty director of phytomedicine, Prof. Dr. Annette Reineke and the faculty director microbiology, Prof. Dr. Großmann give an insight of projects and laboratory equipment.
