GERMANY (Mainz) – Until October 15, 2010, wine experts and junior winemakers have a chance to register for the 2010 Sommelier-Cup. The German Wine Institute (DWI) is hosting the competition in Mainz on November 7 and 8. Participants will have to prove their knowledge about quality and certified wines from German wine-growing regions and win great prizes.

The Sommelier-Cup combines and further develops the junior's competition German Wine (Juniorenwettbewerg Deutscher Wein) and sommelier competition German Wine (Sommelierwettbewerb Deutscher Wein). The DWI promotes the winners of the contest with scholarships for advanced education and schooling trips.

The focus of the two-day contest is on questions about winemaking in Germany and there will also be blind wine tastings, in which the participants will have to recognize wine types and explain winemaking mistakes as well.

Another hard task will be recommending wines to customers and guests, providing wine service as well as information about storing wine and calculations. In the evening of the second competition day, there will be five finalists that will have to prove their knowledge in specific customer or guest consulting situations.

An expert jury, consisting of, among others, representatives of the sommelier Union Germany, Heidelberg School of Hotel Management and Association of restaurant and hotel specialists, will then choose the winner of the DWI Sommelier-Cup. All finalists will receive scholarships for important further education nationally as well as abroad. (red.yoopress)
