Pietro D'Alto, sommelier from Marburg, was third. This means Jürgen Fendt will participate in the world championship of sommeliers 2010 in Chile representing Germany; he will compete with his colleagues from all around the world and fight for the popular title. Sommeliers who are active in catering and in the hotel business were allowed to apply for the participation. The event was organized by the German Sommelier's Union.
In various exam parts, a great deal was demanded of the candidates among others by proving their know-how in terms of wine and wine-growing, wine legislation and the winery business. The final part consisted of a hands-on test with a blind wine tasting of various wines and spirits, bubblies service, decantation of red wines as well as how to perform a cigar service and the correction of errors in a wine menu. The task that the jury prepared on the side of a 5-course-dinner was the look into an international world of wine in order to find the flavorful harmony of wine and food. The rule for all parts of the exam was to meet the strict deadlines.
The fact that at the end Jürgen Fendt managed to beat his sommelier colleagues is due to his excellent technical know-how and of course also his longtime competition experience. Besides many national and international awards, Fendt won the well-known "Trophée Ruinart Germany" numerous times and represented Germany in world championships two times already, in which his highest score was the very accepted 4th place. The runner-up Thomas Sommer proved especially in the hands-on exam that he will be expected to participate in international competitions in the near future. (aw.yoopress)
