The Prädikat wine estates thus represent the following new regulations:
1. Lowering of the acceptable maximum yield of wines of protected designations of origin. The aim is to demarcate quality wines from lower quality wines by using the designation "Protected Designation of Origin" (PDO). Furthermore, the yield will be restricted to 7500 liters per hectare.
2. Restrictions regarding the use of grape varieties: The name of grape varieties in connection with the name of a winegrowing area will be limited to a few grape varieties typical of the region. All remaining grape varieties are supposed to be put on the market with a lower category, such as the designation "Protected Geographical Indication" (PGI).
3. The introduction of a consistent and stricter frame bound to quality for the use of more narrowly demarcated appellations of origin, like place or site name.
4. Stricter requirements regarding grape varieties and yields when using Prädikats such as Kabinett and Spätlese
5. No clearance of winegrowing on areas outside the previous winegrowing areas
Steffen Chistmann, president of the German Prädikat wine estates states the following: "The new designation right offers the historical chance to make clear and generally understandable regulations from which producers and consumers will benefit. This chance may not be lost by creating new terms again and by continuing to use already introduced terms. Only if the claim for clarity and truth is really honored, can the entire German wine industry mark its products, which are demanded on the market in all their varities, as such. Winemakers who decide to produce high quality wines could now make profits which in turn are on par with the wines' quality.
Wine experts, merchants and journalists cannot only find out about further authentic opinions of VDP- producers and representatives, but also discuss together with them at tomorrow's starting ProWein where the association presents itself every year. (aw.yoopress)
