HUNGARY (Budapest) – As in the final of the Football World Championship in 1954 between Germany and Hungary in Berne, it rained “incessantly” in Budapest last Friday. The players of the WEINELF took this as a good sign because back then they had won the match with a legendary 3 to 2 in Berne. Unfortunately, the weather in Budapest was too much “Fritz-Walter-like”. The pitch of the stadium on Margareta Island looked like a swamp. The pitch was unplayable, and therefore the game between the national team of Hungarian winemakers and the WEINELF was cancelled.

It was not easy for the organizers to cancel the game. After all, the guests have travelled long distances and the organizers had put a lot of effort in preparing the game. The Hungarian FIFA referee Viktor Kassai, who was a referee in the match between Germany and Spain on July 7th, had been chosen as impartial arbitrator. However, he also saw no other alternative than cancelling the match.

Instead of continuing the game, a spontaneous tasting of Tokay and Riesling wines was held in the dry catacombs of the stadium.

The International Wine Festival in Budapest also suffered from the constant rain. Significantly fewer visitors were visiting the castle. Those who came were not only able to enjoy the program on stage, many wines from Hungarian winemakers and a wonderful view over the city, but also German wines. The WEINELF presented a selection of wines produced by WEINELF member companies at one of their booths. Riesling and co. have been well-received.

A meeting between delegates of the European wine football teams took place on the brink of the WEINELF visit in Budapest, It was agreed at that meeting to hold the first unofficial European Championship of wine teams in Hungary in May 2011. (aw.yoopress)
