Wine connoisseurs who have a passion for rescuing the viticulture and, thus, the terraced landscape in the Cinque Terre region can participate in the rebuilding of the collapsed and vital dry stone walls. These walls are one of the vintners’ biggest problems. After each big rain, smaller and bigger parts of the dry stone wall have to be rebuilt. This is time-consuming and costly because the stones have to be bought and to be transported to the vineyard before work can begin. When a collapsed wall is not repaired, its dilapidation begins because during the next thunderstorm, the wall below will collapse as well, until the whole slope together with the vineyard slips off irretrievably
How can you help?
By transferring 150 euro (or a multiple of it) to the account mentioned below, because 150 euro is how much it costs to rebuild one square meter of a vineyard wall with a depth of 60 to 80 cm. The Merum magazine sells sample bottles that are left over from tastings; this money is used to double the sum of donations from the readers, as long as the money lasts! So, out of one square meter are made two, out of three square meters are made six, and so on…

At the moment, the Merum wall is as long as 126 square meters! Every day, people who do not only have a passion for wine but as well for the continuance of historic wine landscapes, donate some more meters. This way, the Merum magazine keeps collecting money until to March 31, 2012. And on May, 19, 2012, the Merum editorial department is meeting with the donors and the vintners in the ancient port of Riomaggiore to watch the result and to celebrate a grande festa.
Each donor who sponsors five square meters (ten meters including the doubling) or more, will be thanked by a brass plate on a stone with his or her name on it. As far as smaller donations are concerned, there will be erected one memorial plaque with the names of all donors on it. (red.yoopress)
