UK (London) - By means of new regulations, the British Government warns against drinking two “big” glasses of wine, or two “big” glasses of beer a day as this would triple a person’s risk to develop oral cancer. Recently, “Change4Life”, a department of the British Health and Safety Institute, has started a video action and broadcast a TV spot.

According to a representative survey with 2,000 persons done by the health authorities, health risks such as oral diseases as well as hypertension and a decline in fertility would be increased in case the threshold values are exceeded daily.

The „Change4Life“ campaign is being supported by lobbyists against alcohol, and in particular by health professionals working in senior-citizens homes and nursing homes. Sarah Lyness, director for politics and information at the Cancer Research UK organization, says: “Alcohol is able to increase the risk of seven types of cancer, breast cancer and intestinal cancer being the most frequent of them. This substantiates a recent study that proved 12,500 cases of cancer a year in Great Britain being caused by the consumption of alcohol.”

Lobbyists from the “Alcohol in Moderation” group, an association of 40 chief medical attendants from different universities and medical universities, disagree; they are pleading for a responsible use of alcohol.” A spokesman of the group replies: “The approach looks alarming, whereas the wording of definitions contained is way too mild”.

The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research, which currently provides evidence about the consumption of alcohol of the British to the British Government, feels obliged to contradict. “The current regulations of 2-3 units of alcohol per day for women and of 3-4 units of alcohol for men are good and sufficient. The two big glasses that the Change4Life campaign is talking about is a question of definition because it makes a difference if I drink a glass of Pinot Grigio with 12 percent by volume, or a glass of Shiraz with 14,5 percent by volume,” Helena Conibear, CEO of the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research, explains, adding: “We see the danger of panic. Our efforts to inform the public about the consumption of alcohol have been and still are very intensive. We consider the current regulations as good and reasonable.” (red.yoopress)
