Christie's wine expert Michael Ganne commented: "The legendary Cheval Blanc 1947 compared with an estimate of 150000-250000 U.S. dollars to have auctioned for 304 375 U.S. dollars an anonymous collector is inspiring" (Photo: Christie's)

SWITZERLAND (Geneva) - A very rare Bordeaux wine was sold for a record amount at a wine auction in Geneva. On Tuesday, the Impérial-bottle of Grand Cru Bordeaux Cheval Blanc, vintage 1947, was sold at Christie's for roughly 224.000 euros (roughly 300.000 US dollars). According to Christie's, this was the highest amount every paid for a single wine bottle. Altogether, roughly thousand precious wine bottles were put on auction. Christie's was expecting a yield of 2.6 million euros total.

Michael Ganne, wine expert at Christie's, was very happy about the record high for the Bordeaux. According to him, the price paid for the Impérial-bottle particularly exceeded the auction house's expectations, which they had set to 110.000 to 185.000 euro. Not only was this the only six-liter-bottle of that vintage, but this is also one of the "best Bordeaux wines of all times, not only because of its rare quality, more so because of its storability". Ganne states the wine could easily be stored for another 50 years. The year 1947 had been very warm, thus, this vintage tastes very strongly of fruits, says Ganne, who was allowed to taste the precious Grand Cru Bordeaux. (red.yoopress)
