CHINA (Hong Kong) - The wine collection of the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber exceeded the previously estimated auction sales in yesterday’s auction conducted by Sotheby’s at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong. His wines were sold for a total of 5.6 million U.S. dollars (around 4.1 million Euros) (also see our preliminary report).

“We have found a buyer for each of 746 lots,” said Serena Sutcliffe, who is in charge of the wine department at Sotheby’s, with joy. “Twelve bottles of Château Petrus alone were sold for 77.546 dollars (about 57,000 Euros).”

Due to the wine hype, particularly in Asia and especially in Hong Kong, Lloyd Webber could be sure to get a good price. Lloyd Webber, who had collected wines over decades, sold the wines with a light heart also because of the expected proceeds. “I hope the new owners enjoy my wines as much as I have and are happy,” he said in a statement following the six-hour sale. Furthermore, this is great advertising for the premiere of Cats here at the Mandarin Hotel and for the upcoming tour throughout China afterwards.” (a.wirtzfeld)
