Divers discovered around 150 sparkling wines in a sunken schooner at ca 1825-1930

FINLAND (Helsinki) - According to Finland's autonomous province of Aland, the bottle of champagne found by divers in the estuary mouth in the Gulf of Bothnia (we reported), will be auctioned off in June this year. In charge of the auction will be the auction house Acker Merall and Condit and is supposed to take place on June 3, 2010 in the capital Mariehamn.

One of the bottles comes from the Champagne house Veuve Clicquot, the other one from Winery Juglar, which does no longer exist today. Both bottles are part of a charge of around 150 bubbly wines that were discovered by divers in the ship wreck. The latter was a very common two-mast ship that is estimated to have sunk between 1825 and 1830. Ever since then, the bottles had been located in an ideal position, say experts, namely on the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

"These bottles that are now known to be the world's oldest Veuve Clicqout and Juglar Champagner, are very popular on the market", says Champagne-expert Richard Juhlin about the upcoming auction. "We really cannot make any estimations towards the end price at this moment. I think there will be a new record". Juhlin tried to guess how much the wines were worth when he tasted each champagne with other experts in November of last year. "I am convinced that the 100.000 Euro mark per bottle will definitely be exceeded", said Juhlin back then.

„Ah!", was the general opinion among the experts when tasting the almost 200 year-old wines. The Juglar is said to be intensive, forceful and mushroom-like in the taste. The Veuve Clicqout strongly reminded of Chardonnay with notes of lime blossoms and lime skins. Either way, the future owner of these champagnes will have a lot of trouble making up their minds - whether to keep it, invest into it or simply drink it. (red.yoopress)
