UK (London) - The latest Sotheby’s auction at the end of February substantiated an enormous interest in the wine region of Burgundy. Wine lovers from Asia boosted the bids to regions far above expectations. So, an Asian wine collector purchased a bottle of the domaine Romanée Conti from 1962 by auction for as much as 9,400 ₤ (about 11,100 euro). The revenues for wines of the Rousseau winery, Burgundy, exceeded by far the expectations of the auction house.

Even six bottles of the 2000 La Mouline wine from the Côte Rôtie (northern Rhône region) from the E. Guigal Estate attained a price of 1,586 ₤ (about 1,880 euro); this equals twice the price expected. So, the results show a diversification of the market for high-level wines. “It is not just Bordeaux, but meanwhile Burgundy is almost equivalent for Asian wine lovers”, Stephen Mould, director of the wine department for Europe at Sotheby’s, comments.

However, Bordeaux is on the first rank of Asian interest as far as elder vintages of fine drops are concerned. It was above all ripe wines from the Le Pin, Pétrus and Lafite Rothschild estates that were purchased by auction at high prices, which by far exceeded estimations of the auction house.

“We are happy about the results”, Stephen Mould expresses his joy. “Above all the ripe wines from Bordeaux and the fine drops from the Romanée Conti region have delighted our customers. About 44 percent of the lots went to Asia, among them all top 10 lots. There are left over as few as 77 lots out of 600.” (red.yoopress)
