Marathon tasting in the Silvaner-year - A total of 534 Silvaner wines qualified, 55 percent of them came from the Franken region and 27 percent from Rheinhessen, the rest were from abroad

GERMANY (Würzburg) - Apparently, Silvaner wines are booming in the Silvaner-year- even in the large competition that was organized by the Silvaner Forum. At the reception of the Bavarian state government in the Residenz Palace of Würzburg, Count Ferdinand of Castell-Castell, chairman of the association, was able to report that the variety receives "a completely new attention on national and international level". He was particularly pleased about that because the first Silvaner grapes in Germany were planted at Castell in 1659.

Most of the wines almost inevitably came from the Franken region (55 percent), followed by Rheinhessen (27 percent). As expected, the number of participants from abroad was at a low rate. Winners were announced in different categories.

Michael Fröhlich from Escherndorf won with his 2008 quality wine in the category "Basic". With his 2008 Großes Gewächs, Wilhelm Arnold from Randersacker succeeded in the category "Premium". The 2008 Trockenbeerauslese from Horst Sauer in Escherndorf won in the category "Nobel".

Rheinhessen (Russbach wine estate, Eppelsheim) received the award for the "Best Operating Performance". A 2007 Grand Cru from the Domaine Wittmann from Mittelbergheim (Elsace) was labeled as "Silvaner- Discovery". The "Golden Vine Scissor" was awarded to all winners. (r.knoll)
