GERMANY (Würzburg) – Once again, Franconia's vintagers had a reason to be happy. They received a total of 32 awards at the “International Bioweinpreis 2010”. The biggest price, the so-called “Grosse Gold” (English: Big Gold), was awarded three times to Franconia, where there is 200 hectares of bioviticulture. No other German wine-growing region was this successful.

The winners were a 2009 Silvaner Kabinett dry from the Winzerhof Burrlein  (Mainstockheim) and the winery Helmut Christ (Nordheim) as well as a 2009 Kerner Auslese from the winery Bernhard
Völker (Kitzingen). In Franconia, the wineries Juliusspital (Würzburg) was awarded seven medals and three recommendations. Also among the awarded wineries are the Edgar Wallrapp winery (Theilheim), Dreschers Weine (Sommerach) and the vintager's association of Thüngersheim.

“Every price that goes to Franconia is a success for the whole region”, says Artur Steinmann, President of the Franconian viticulture's association. “Particularly in the bio-viticulture, this is a very obvious sign of our involvement in an intact and healthy cultural landscape.”

“Isn't it great to have sustainable economic activity and produce an excellent quality at the same time. I am so grateful to our member wineries, which took part in this international contest and I congratulate them on their success”, says Klemens Rumpel, Chairman of the FÖW - Bund Fränkischer Ökowinzer und – weingüter e.V. (Association of Franconian eco-vintagers and wineries)

681 wines from 11 countries participated in the contest that was organized by the WINE System corporation and the Sensorik expert Martin Darting. The tasting took place on two days and its jury was formed by wine makers, restaurant owners, wine traders and media representatives. (aw.yoopress)
