GERMANY (Schloss Bensberg) - This year it was an Italian who won the title of the trade journal "Feinschmecker": It was the red Ornellaia, which comes from Tuscany and which was born in the shadow of cypresses of Bolgheri. It was exactly that wine that was rewarded with the popular wine award "Wine Legend" by the jury composed of experts and wine critics.

"There are excellent wines that have a very unique aura and that are extremely popular. They are known among wine experts all around the world, even if the latter have not even tried these wines yet", explains Madeleine Jakits, chief editor at the magazine "Der Feinschmecker". "Those wines have been watched by experts for many many vintages and they have been enjoyed and written about in many wine publications" she adds. "The Feinschmecker jury includes this Ornellaia in the list of legendary wines of the world, which is why it received the wine award "Wine Legend", emphasizes Jakits.

Giovanni Geddes de Filicaja, CEO of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, was handed the prize by  Rémi Krug, another myth of the international wine industry. "Ornellaia is one of the rare wines that show in a wonderful way how a person is able to express the character of a unique terroir with visions and creative force", he said when handing over the prize.

"I feel very honored to take over this prize for the 2007 Ornellaia and we appreciate the recognition that we have received from Germany, not only today but for a very long time", said Giovanni Geddes. Previous receivers of the wine prize were Krug, Penfolds, Sassicaia and Vega Sicilia,  who are also among the well-known protagonists in the international wine scene.

"This evening is a particularly happy occasion for me for two reasons", emphasized Axel Heinz, production manager and oenologist at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. "First, this prize rewards the passion of our daily work, without which such an Italian wine excellence would not be possible. And then, because I am really really happy about this prize coming from Germany, since I have German roots myself", says the winemaker.

For the ninth time Der Feinschmecker organized this annual award and made everyone wait anxiously. Roughly 700 guests were present at the exclusive event and the emotions on and in front of the stage were flying high. Some of the wines that were served were among the prize-winners, like the 2007 Ornellaia vintage of course.  (red.yoopress)
