GERMANY (Bergisch-Gladbach) - The "Wine Awards 2011" ceremony at the Grandhotel Schloss Bensber in Bergisch-Gladbach last weekend included the "Collection of the year 2011"-award, which was a surprise indeed. For the first time a red wine collection by Winery H.J. Kreuzberg from Dernau was awarded with the German "Wine Oscar".

The Feinschmecker magazine uses this award to rewared the best and most coherent German wine collection. In the previous years, all of the winners were always wineries that specialized in white wine collections. Thus, the German wine queen Mandy Grossgarten is convinced: "this award for the red wine collection shows that red wines have reached an upper level in Germany as well and how much they are appreciated in the wine scene. Of course I am particularly happy that a winery from my hometown received this award", says Mandy. "The Winery Kreuzberg is thus acting as the pioneer in terms of quality management in the vineyard and innovation in the cellar".

The Winery H.J. Kreuzberg was able to get their hands on some other awards last year, like the "Collection of the year 2010" at wein-plus.de, 3½ stars in the „Eichelmann-Deutschlands Weine 2011“ and the fourth "F" in the "Feinschmecker- the best wineries in Germany 2011".

"This was a real sensation for us", says winemaker Ludwig Kreuzberg. "I knew that we were doing the right thing with our red wines, but that we would win such an award in the white-wine country of Germany, especially nowadays, is completely surprising for me as well as my partners. This will help us improving our quality even more".

The Winery H.J. Kreuzberg in Dernau, the center of the Ahr-valley, has around 9 hectares of vineyards, of which more than 6 hectares are steep sites. All of them show a large amount of Devon steep slate rocks, which gives the wine its Ahr-typical character. The winery makes regional red wine specialties like the Pinot Noir and Dornfelder, but also internationally the types Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The winery is member of the "VDP - Praedikatsweingueter" and and seven of their sites were classified "Grosse Gewaechse" (Grand Grus) by the VDP. Today this winery is one of the most popular wineries in the Ahr-region and one of the 100 best German wineries period. (red.yoopress)
