GERMANY (Neustadt / Weinstraße) - It has been a good tradition since 1996 that the trade journal WEINWIRTSCHAFT presents the 100 most successful wines of the the previous year in early January. The preparation for this year's edition had already started in October, when wine retailers, importers and the leading national and international producers were asked to nominate their best-selling wines. A total of 550 wines competed for the first spots. Finally, 40 white wines and 60 red wines were able to leave their competitors behind. They convinced the editors with top qualities, perfect cost-benefit ratio, a clear retail structure and example-setting marketing.

German Riesling Wines are Bestsellers

Roughly 60 percent of the winning white wines came from German wineries, among them particularly popular German Riesling producers, whose wines were at the top of the list. The title white wine of the year was given to the 2009 Saar Riesling from the Weingut Van Volxem in Wittingen (Moselle). Second was the 2009 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Silberlack Grand Cru by Fürst von Metternich-Winneburg'sche Domäne in the Rhinegau. Third was 2009 Riesling Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten Dr. Deinhard Kabinett dry from the Palatinate Weingut Von Winning.

German Red Wine of the Year

The title German Red wine of the Year went to Weingut Knipser for its 2008 Blauer Pinot Noir dry. The Palatinate winery is one of the few German producers that was able to climb high with their red wines this year. "This is the impact of the difficult vintage 2008, which showed great Pinot Noirs in Germany, but made it rather difficult for red wine producers", recall the magazine's editors.

Competition for Italy's red wines?

Spain and France were able to move up in the red wine sector. Both wine nations were part of the winners with 10 wines each - a good increase of roughly 50 percent compared to the previous year. However, Italian producers still could not be beat. A total of 25 red wines from Italy was among the 100 best wines of the year. It is not surprising that three Italian red wines share the top.

The 2006 Vigna Pedale Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva DOC by Torrevento (GES Sorrentiono) was named best red wine of the year, followed by the 2006 Poggio Delle Faine Rosso Toscano IGT by Francesco Minini Cantina and the 2007 Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rúfina DOCG by Marchesi de‘ Frescobaldi (Schlumberger distributorship).
