The VDP, originally founded in 1910 as association of auctioneers of unadulterated wines, has now the declaration “predicate” in his name, and it operates officially under the name “VDP. Die Prädikatsweingüter” (VDP. The predicate wineries). Publicly, however, classical predicates like late vintage, selection and so on do no longer play the vital role in the noble club. Nowadays, the focus is on the significance of the vineyards.
It can be assumed that in the future, many wineries will declare Ortsweine (second level wines) and Gutsweine (third level wines) as high quality wines, which will to yield most of the turnovers, and that Große Gewächse, legally declared as high-quality wine, too, will be the flagships.
Isn’t it high time then to think about renaming the association and to go away from the three letters VDP? VDP – that’s how scores of other associations in Germany called themselves, like for instance, preparators, representatives of puppet theaters, paper mills, pfandbrief distributors, teachers and public schools… (r.knoll)
