Pascal Sohns parents, Erich and Sabine Sohns, have the motto of good wine coming from good vineyards – while taking good care of nature and being selective in the pickings – thus, the future looks good for the young vintager

GERMANY (Geisenheim) - “Sohns, Geisenheim”, sound familiar? Not even a detailed wine guide like the Gault Millau took notice of the 6-hectare-business near the German wine-university. Maybe that was because Armin Diel, former executive director of the wine guide and soccer fan was too busy last year up to his retirement from his work in the Weinelf Germany, to realize that there was a junior vintager hidden among all these guys, who also scores in every game.

Pascal Sohns is the name of the junior in the family business of father Erich Sohns. We stood on the same green soccer field at a game of the Weinelf against a team of the Austrian wine academy in Geisenheim. The junior was cheering for his team and at the same time talked very nicely to gray-haired author of this article. Afterwards, during the third halftime, people had the chance to taste a very attractive Sohns-pinot blanc in the campus of Geisenheim. That made us very curious.

Shortly after that, we tasted a couple of other Sohns-wines that showed us that the pinot blanc was not a fishfly. Among the wines tasted, were a juicy 2008 Riesling quality wine dry (with a very nice price of €3,80), a pleasant acid-rich Riesling Kabinett 2007, an excellent Riesling late vintage dry from 2008, which were even a little bit better than the first vintage from the Geisenheimer Kläuserweg from 2007.

Father and son Sohns are also very talented with fruits, which is proven by an excellent 2007 Riesling late vintage half-dry and a noble Riesling Beerenauslese from the same vintage. Pinot noir can also be found among their wines. Its quality is solid, however it is not really ready for the top yet.

Originally, Pascal did not want to become a vintager, however, he changed his mind and started helping out in the business, and now still considers himself his father's apprentice. “He's the boss!”. The boss has the motto that good wine is made in the vineyard. He takes good care of nature and is very selective in the pickings. He sells his wines preferably at his home. The nearby restaurant that is managed by mother Sabine, is open early August through mid-September.

We can only hope, that one day this junior talent will not be discovered by a talent search from Mainz or Frankfurt and his wine business would thus have to be paused for a while...(r.knoll)
