Fully mature grapes in the Randersacker Pfülben

GERMANY (Würzburg) - Brilliant, dreamlike exceptional: The vintage 2009 is done and in the cellars of the Franconian quality wineries there is a vintage that makes vintagers romanticize. The wineries were lucky to have a perfect weather for their grapes; the result: aromatic and healthy grapes. "The vintage 2009 will be one of the big, outstanding vintages in Franconia", anticipates Karl Schmitt (Randersacker), chairman of the VDP Franconia: "We can expect very aromatic and very harmonic, delicate and mature wines."

The VDP-vintagers are expecting outstanding results particularly when looking at the Silvaner, that is celebrating its 350th anniversary in Franconia (we reported). Already the first couple of samples in the Franconian vineyards raised hopes for an exceptional quality. "Never before has a Silvaner tasted this good as a grape already", says Karl-Heinz Rebitzer from the Fürstlich Castell'schen Domänenamt (Castell).

The Silvaner was lucky to have a dry late summer, since the grape does not like "wet feet" so shortly before the picking; the grapes had a chance to ripen quietly and without any rot in 2009.

"The Silvaner is presenting itself in a very good shape in its anniversary year", says Dr. Heinrich Wirsching (Iphofen). But also in terms of red wine, the year 2009 seems to have a lot to offer. "Highly ripe, thick layered and very small grapes" Paul Fürst (Bürgstadt) could saw: "simply perfect - this could turn into a very big vintage".

"Due to the lack of rot and bacteria, there was no stress in the Franconian picking", says Hors Sauer (Escherndorf). "Whether Silvaner or Riesling, this year you were really able to get quality right out of the vineyard, namely the quality you needed when you thought about must weight and acid content".

However, in terms of light wines, the vintagers had to hurry up with picking. "Otherwise we would have lost the must weights", says Eva Pfaff-Düker (Volkach). All in all: An exceptional vintage with above-average qualities, that did, however, not bring the expected amount in all areas. (aw.yoopress)
