Castell 2009: Vintage between shorts and winter clothing

A tough, long winter was followed by a short and potential spring. The warm April and the hot May caused a jump in development of the grapes, which was stopped by the cold spell around June. Due to the distinct developmental stages, an unusual long blossom demanded a work-intensive and sophisticated treatment. In the wet June, the protection of the plants was top priority and in August it was clear that there would be an early picking.

Thanks to god Castell escaped the hail to the most part and the picking started very quickly on September 22nd; a solid high-pressure weather with summerly temperatures allowed an easy continuing process. Within the last picking days, fall came with cool temperatures of 10 Crad Celsius. There is still some Eiswein grapes that are waiting for cool temperatures. Good news: This year in July there was a so-called Grünlese for the Verjus again.

With a sales plus of 5 percent, the winery was successful despite the bad news about the economy. This news also proves the trend away from exchangeable international wines to a rediscovered awareness for German wine regions. And this is where Franconia is playing a big role in the Silvaner-anniversary year.

To the Silvaner, to the future! - More than 200 different events in and outside of Franconia attracted attention for the Silvaner. The anniversary in Castell was opened with a huge ceremonial act, with more than 400 wine presentations from almost 70 wine-growing regions, politicians, wine experts and the media were present. Probably the most impressive event was the International Rare Tasting in the Castell castle with a total of 26 wine from 3 countries and the worldwide leading wine critics. We opened a 1951 Casteller Schlossberg Silvaner.

"Despite numerous media reports from Hamburg to Munich and despite the positive reaction of the wine critics, we will always have to work on the reputation of the Silvaner", says winery director Karl-Heinz Rebitzer. "The Silvaner should not remain unknown internationally, but it should be known as a contemporary, authentic symbol of Franconia's reputation.
