GERMANY (Wolfenweiler) - The heavy losses of the blue Pinot Noir, Baden's most important wine type, could not be recorded everywhere. Some winemakers and wine-growing regions fared better. The Winery Friedrich Kiefer am Kaiserstuhl recorded very sound grapes, which particularly benefitted from the good October weather. Winemaker Florian Zeller from the Winemaker's Association Wolfenweiler in the Markgräflerland: „We recorded an average of 90° Öchsle for Pinot Noir, the vintage was perfect". Winery Andreas Männle: „We easily got the 100°  Öchsle and we will see red wines that are closer to the French Burgundy types due to their slightly stronger fruit acid, even for the Pinot Noir".

The Winery Bös in the Baden Kraichgau is praising the vintage to the skies: "We separated the grapes and couldn't find any signs of decay, rather grapes in great health with 100°Öchsle.“ Waldulm and Oberkirch were also able to record a Pinot Gris with an average of 90° Öchsle. Praised at all times is the Pinot Blanc, it seems like this year will be a Pinot Blanc year.

Leopold Schätzle from the same-named winery in Endigen am Kaiserstuhl says: "We have rarely seen such beautiful Pinot Blanc Kabinett wines like these". Winemaker Ingo Ehret from the Winemaker's Association Laufen agrees: "We noticed very beautiful wines particularly among the Pinot Blancs".

Absolutely no losses were seen with the Gutedel, which is mainly grown in the South-Baden  Markgräflerland. "This year's winner for us is definitely the Gutedel. The quality of the wines is just perfect", says Andreas Philipp from the Auggener Schäf. This is also confirmed in Laufen, where they were able to get some Gutedel Kabinett. Martin Schmidt from the Winery Friedrich Kiefer sums it all up: "Despite the heavy losses in this year's vintage, the freshness, brilliance and pureness of the wines will make this year's vintage a special one". This is even written in his Fall's report. (d.simon)
