GERMANY (Grossheringen) - Today, the Zahn family’s 14 hectare family-run winery in the wine growing area of Saale-Unstrut officially finishes its vintage of 2011. After a long time of patient waiting, Thuringia reached such low temperatures that are necessary - according to the German wine law - to harvest ice wine grapes.

André Zahn, sun of the owner and cellarer, had decided together with his family to leave some Riesling grapes in the vineyard of Kaatschener Dachsberg, hoping for an ice wine. For a long time, it didn’t look as if such low temperatures would be reached. The grapes dried and dried, so the amount of ice wine expected more and more diminished.

“2011 will be a difficult ice wine year in the whole of Germany, and it will yield very rare drops”, André Zahn pleaded for the preservation of the 300 vines. The prouder, he was able today to present botrytized and mostly healthy and dried grapes.

Measurements of the must weight yielded an average of 221° Oechsle, which is an extraordinary record value for the winery. Over 300 kilograms of grapes yielded just over 40 liters of ice wine. Now the know-how of the cellarer is demanded to vinify a tasteful and extraordinary drop.

The Zahn winery, founded in 1998, is based in the wine growing area of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, Thuringia. Over 10 hectares are being cultivated; the wines are being sold ex winery and in the family’s own wine restaurant on the Saale river. Prime sorts of grapes cultivated are, above all, Gutedel, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Kerner, Bacchus and Riesling for white wines, and for red wines, the Blaue Zweigelt plays the vital role.
