A summer with vegetational challenges will bring a reduced yield in Burgundy – Grape development after the flowering

FRANCE (Dijon) - According to experts, producers in Burgundy are facing a challenging harvest. Due to the difficult summer, marked by a rainy start, interrupted by hot spells, grapes are in many places underdeveloped after flowering. This leads, together with mildew, to an expected yield reduction. Moreover, an increased use of sulfur was necessary to prevent further disease infestation.

At the Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg in Vosne Romanée, some of the employees got a ban on taking leave due to those conditions. “In a complicated year like this, we leave some of our employees on the domain in August to keep an eye on our vineyards”, Andrée Mugneret explains. “Furthermore, we expect a storm period with hail, as the weather service has just informed us.”

According to Ms. Mugneret, it is difficult to say something about the quality of this year’s harvest at this moment. “It would be as if one predicted after four months of pregnancy how the child is developing”, Ms. Mugneret says. “I, for one, expect a reduced yield.”

Virginie Taupenot-Daniel von der Domaine Taupenot Merme aus Morey St. Denis has a slightly more optimistic view: „Grapes that are not affected are small and concentrated, which makes us expect smaller yields, but even though, they have the potential to develop an excellent quality.” (red.yoopress)
