GERMANY (Rheinhessen) – At the moment of its birth, in 1985, it used to be a prestigious wine for Germany’s largest growing area, which used to live in want and to be considered contemptuously at that time (and which today is considered as prospering region). The Rheinhessen Silvaner, in short called “RS”, has never developed into a qualitative high-flyer, but as a rule, it always yielded correct basic wines at a fair price, vinified dry, mostly vivified by a natural content of carbonic acid. Over 50 wineries used to participate, doing good business with it. It contributed to promote Silvaner, which the vintners mostly sold off cheaply (and whose vineyards still contain just under 2,500 hectares).
