Despite isolated regionally reduced harvest areas, the French wine nation increases in 2011 income

FRANCE (Paris) - According to a prognosis of the French department  „Ministère de l’Alimentation, de l’Agriculture et de la Pêche (MAAP)“ the 2011 wine harvest will cross the 47 million hectar liter margin, which is an increase of 6 percent compared to 2010. Their estimate combines 13.6 million hectare liters from the classified appelations IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée*) and 23 million hectare liters from AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée*). Despite clearings in the region Languedoc-Roussillon, which have reduced the vineyards by 4 percent, this region will cross the margin by around 1 million to 13.1 million hectare liters.

However, the department admits that there could be another reduction before the end of the harvest, since the weather might have some negative effects on the plants. The press says: "Everything is under control, however, a wet climate can be expected and thus, everyone should be prepared for fungal infestation".

*IGP, AOP: The new classification in France, which will be introduced in the 2012 vintage, will only have three different categories instead of four. The first and lowest category is: "Vin de France", which categorizes table wine and which replaces the old category "Vin de Table". The second and middle category is "IGP" (Indication Géographique Protégée) and replaces „Vin de Pays“. The third and highest category is „AOP“ (Appellation d'Origine Protégée), which will be used instead of the old "AOC". (red.yoopress)
