GERMANY (Würzburg) - As of January 1, 20100, the Juliusspital foundation will become the new owner of the total estate of the Vogelsburg, thus cutting ties with the Augustine Sister's Union, according to prioress Hedwig Mayer and Walter Herberth, managing director of the Würzburg Juliusspital.

Included in this purchase are the vineyards of the “Vogelsburger Pforte”, with a size of almost one hectare. The vine field is under ownership and right in the center of the luxury vine field Escherndorfer Lump. The ecologic viticulture, that was launched in the 60's in the Vogelsburg, will be continued by Würzburg and thus perfectly fits into the continuing development of sustainable viticulture philosophy of the winery Juliusspital.

Germany's second-largest winery and largest Silvaner-winery in the world already brought out a bio-collection with its vintage of 2007, which is now usefully enhanced and extended. “The Juliusspital intends to preserve the Vogelsburg as a recognizable union”, says managing director Herberth. This also includes the catering business and liturgy. “January 1st won't hurt that much”, says Herberth. He thinks that in the coming months there might be another negotiation between the Juliusspital and the Sisters. “It is very important to us that the transition goes smoothly and that the Sisters still have a home here”, says Herberth.

Vogelsburg: The cradle of eco-viticulture: Already in the 1960s, the Augustine Sisters did without additives in their vineyards of Vogelsburg near Volkach – which a lot of people did not approve of in those times and which today is considered a revolutionary idea. (photo: Juliusspital)

Since 1957, the Augustine Sisters have been in power at the Vogelsburg near Volkach, which was first mentioned in a document in 874. Still today, five Sisters live in the non-monastery cohabitation there. They work in the church, run a conference center and work on various vineyards with a total acreage of two hectares.

Ever since 1964, the Augustine Sisters have been doing without the use of additives – which used to not be approved of and which is now considered a revolutionary idea. The bocksbeutel “Vogelsburger Pforte” are particularly popular in restaurants and inns, which are owned by the Sisters. The Vogelsburg  church , „Maria Schutz“, is very popular among tourists and conference guests as a place of serenity and self-examination.

As of January 1, 2011, the foundation Juliusspital (which impressively beat its competitor) will completely take over the Vogelsburg. (aw.yoopress)
