GERMANY (Osthofen) - Thinking of plain landscapes and indian romantic when hearing the name Karl May might fool you in the end. Karl May is not only the name of a big story teller, but also of a very decent winery from Southern Rhinehesse. It is managed by the brothers Peter and Fritz May, that not only carry the same name but who are also a real credit to their red wine "Blutsbruder" (German for bloodbrothers).

It is a given that one gets used to the jokes throughout childhood with a name like this. Maybe that is why the May brothers are so funny. However, the Blutsbruder wine is absolutely no joke, after all, the May-brothers made it themselves: an excellent Cuvée made of two red wines that perfectly go together - just like the two brothers. "Blutsbruder" can only be found at chosen wine stores and in upper class restaurants, among them the well-known restaurant Sansibar in Sylt. Those who seem to be interested in this strange creation can order the hand-filled 12-liter bottle that should make sure that the next wine event will take a lot longer.

Next to the "Blutsbruder", the winery Karl May also stands for a couple of other elegant wines that are very popular among wine experts. Peter and Fritz May are now the 7th generation that took over the traditional family business of 14 hectares, which has been lead as an ecologic business for a couple of years now. Before taking over the business, both brothers spent their time learning about the profession. Not only did they graduate from a University of Oenology, they also made various trips to renowned wineries and winemakers. These trips led Peter May to Framingham in New Zealand, from where he returned with many impressions and new ideas. His brother Fritz has seen the whole (wine)world. From Preisinger in Austria, where he got to know soul of red wine to Grosset in Australia. When he returned to the family winery, all these inspirations were part of his creations.

Thus, it was not long before the brothers saw their success. Not only in terms of grapes but also in terms of numerous awards that they received for their wines. Among them the Staatsehrenpreis of Rhineland Palatinate, altogether two grapes in the Gault-Millau  and the German Red Wine Prize 2008 and 2010 - of which the brothers are particularly proud.
