The name Hickinbotham used to refer to the construction industry in Australia. However, when Alan Robb Hickinbotham invested part of his wealth in building a winery in 1936 and later his sons Alain David and Ian, one of the biggest family wineries in whole Australia was born.
The Clarendon Estate Vineyards have more than 180 hectares of vineyards and are very popular for their elite-Shiraz, tope Crenach- and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Thus, the Hickinbothams are known for their perfectionist Australian oenology. The grapes of Clarendon Hills and other top Estate sites always turn into winning wines, which benefits Penfolds Grange, Eileen Hardy and of course the ones from Clarendon Hills.
The very historic estate of Clarendon Hills, which was built in 1858, is located in the northeastern corner of McLaren Vale with a view of the small town of Clarendon. The vineyard soil's geology is about 750 million years old. Nowadays, the rather dry hills are irrigated by the picturesque river Onkaparinga - the vine rows are usually about 250 meters long.
"There are not many vineyards like these in the rest of the world", claims Barbara Banke. "My family and I have had great experiences with this Estate in Australia. When we found out that Hickinbothams Clarendon Hills was put up for sale, we were more than interested. After all, the committment of the Hickinbothams family, the extraordinary qualities of its grapes and the very careful and proud dealing with their land is known in the wine scene. We want to be part of these values. We are very privileged to received this diamond and we are proud that we can continue this popular legacy".

Clarendon Hills consists of two very interesting buildings. The main house, which has a Château-style and which was built in the 1970s by the Hickinbotham family as well as the so-called "Earth Shelter House", which was designed in 1981 and built by the German architect Gerhard Schürer. Both buildings have been remodeled to be a hotel and are part of the most popular items apart from the wines from Clarendon Hills. Last but not least, the property also includes a very small but impressive Hickinbotham boutique winery, which will continue to sell the popular brand Clarendon Hills, just with a different owner.
