GERMANY (Koblenz) - The number of complaints concerning Italian wines in Rhineland Palatinate has risen to 19, reports the Land Laboratory Service Office in Rhineland- Palatinate (LUA) in a current press release.  However, no health- threatening substances have been found during the controls so far.

The most recent investigations have revealed that seven wines had been watered. Henceforth, this assessment of the LUA has been made possible after the required reference values for the 2007 vintage had been delivered from Italy.

Ten wines have been objected because of foulness characteristics including biologically conditioned alterations, oxidation or Geranium taint. The Ministry already informed two weeks ago that two samples contained illegal supplements of malic acid whereof one has been watered at the same time. One sample contained added sorbit suggesting a supple-ment of fruit juices.

Available stocks containing wines which had been showing substantial alterations like watering or malic acid supplement have already been secured by the authorities. Over 500.000 liters of wine have been seized in retail sales and cellars so far. Affected companies have been summoned to take back wines which had already been available in the stores.

"Wines showing signs of foulness are not allowed to be put in circulation." According to a spokesman of the LUA, further measures will be decided upon individual cases.

In retrospect: The LUA has systematically taken 110 samples in the past months after reports about artificially produced or adulterated wine from Italy have been published.  Furthermore, the ministry called upon Italian authorities to give specific details about the origin of these falsified wines. The federal state government of Rhineland- Palatinate immediately urged the Federal Government of Germany as well as the EU to forward the information without further delay. (aw.yoopress)
