Out of 50 tested Argentine wines, 48 were free of natamycin

GERMANY (Koblenz) - The German investigations office (LUA - Landesuntersuchungsamt) has found the illegal substance Natamycin in another red wine from Argentina once again. The wine was a Villa Paola - San Rafael - Mendoza - 2008 - Produced and bottled in Argentina. The back of the bottle reads the batch number LOT N° 01/2009.

The wine is identical with the already seized product Villa Atuel 2008 San Rafael, Syrah Merlot, Argentina, L-WT1377j. The wines are from the same Argentine winery. They had been taken out of the stores many times. (We reported)

Natamycin does not pose a health risk, however it is illegal in Europe to use this antibiotic in wine. It is also illegal to import any wines to the EU that were in contact with Natamycin.

After hints that Natamycin-affected wines might have gotten to Rhineland-Palatinate, so far 50 wines from Argentina, South Africa, Chile, Australia, USA and Brazil were tested by the LUA. 48 wines were free of Natamycin. (aw.yoopress)
