Once again the winery Kaltern provided for the number one in the category Kalterersee wines at this year's Vernatsch Cup

ITALY (Tyrol) - In a multi-level selection procedure, the international jury, among which were oenologists, sommeliers and wine journalists from Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Japan, selected the "Vernatsch of the year 2008" from 95 Vernatsch wines.

In order to put more emphasis on how the Vernatsch wines are bound to their place of origin and how versatile they are, the wines -for the first time- were tasted and rated separately according to their place of origin and their type. Additionally, a new category, called "The other Vernatsch" was brought to life, in which Vernatsch wines of older vintages are tasted.

The highlight of this year's fifth Vernatsch Cup was the announcement of the "Vernatsch of the year" and the Vernatsch gala that followed. The Vernatsch did, without any doubt, convince the guests of its versatility. Farmhouse bacon from South Tyrol was served as an appetizer and later, the Vigilius cooks, under head chef Hans-Peter Pinkowsky, showed their mastery in cooking. Delicacies from the Asian, Italian and South Tyrol's cuisine were served to the Vernatsch of the year and assorted well with each other.

"We are mixing the Vernatsch with international cuisine and this way show what is possible", emphasizes Othmar Kiem, wine journalist and promoter of the Vernatsch Cup. "The Vernatsch wine is a traditional one and it is very fashionable again. It is so well-liked because it is mild and fruity."

The Vernatsch Cup in South Tyrol was established four years ago in order to promote the high quality of the Vernatsch wines and this year is the fifth time it is taking place. Ulrich Ladurner, entrepreneur and owner of the Vigilius mountain resort, is, himself a declared Vernatsch-fan and he was the one who had the idea of the Cup in the first place.
