France diplomat in Hongkong is said to have stolen wine

CHINA (Hongkong) - The French consul-general in Hongkong was suspended for stealing two expensive bottles of wine. At the request of the Chinese government, Marc Fonbaustier was sent back to Paris, a source in the Chinese Special Administrative Region said on Tuesday.

According to another source in HongKong, the 46-year-old is accused of stealing the bottles in the restaurant of a private club in Hongkong. A report of the “Apple Daily” newspaper said that the wine was worth almost 5000 Euros. Fonbaustier has been consul-general for one year, thus being France’s highest representative in Hongkong and Macau.

Police and the French embassy in HongKong both declined comment on the accusations on Tuesday. Bernard Valero, spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry, said last Thursday that Fonbaustier had been suspended. An “administrative investigation” has been started to examine the accusations. Fonbaustier was trained at the Ecole Nationale d’ Administration (ENA) élite school in Paris and served at the French embassy in India. (red.yoopress)
