FRANCE (Rennes) – The country home of Liliane Bettencourt, L’Oréal billionaire and France’s wealthiest woman, has been burglarized. According to first investigations, “several bottles of fine wine” as well as one or two valuable objects had been stolen from the mansion on the Breton coast, the police said on Thursday. The luxury estate near Paimpol on the côtes d’armor, western France, is surrounded by a park, secured by fences, and only visible from the seaside.

When the burglary happened in the early Tuesday morning, there was nobody there in the mansion. It is presumed that two burglars broke into the estate by a cellar window; it was Eugène Schueller, father of Liliane Bettencourt, who built the estate in the 1920ies. The wine bottles stolen were no valuable collectibles but simply “good wines”, the prosecuting attorney relativized now.

Liliane Bettencourt is in the center of a number of affairs in France, which as well shook the conservative government of President Nicolas Sarcozy. Apart from tax evasion, she is accused of having paid illegal donations to the UMP, the conservative governing party. The 89 year old lady, who was incapacitated due to dementia, is the principal shareholder of the L’Oréal cosmetics corporation; her assets are being estimated at 17 billion euros. (red.yoopress)
