About half of the estimated 1.24 billion pound are spent in hotels, pubs and bars, about 13 percent are spent in restaurants, and the rest is spent in other branches like clothing, literature up to art and souvenirs. These figures show the potential of the Olympic Games for the domestic gastronomy.
There are, however, special problems. To achieve those turnovers, a sophisticated infrastructure and logistics are necessary because many parts of London are locked either completely or at least in the daytime, such as running tracks, access roads closed for safety reasons, or parts of districts. About 2,500 locations alone must be bypassed on one hand but also be furnished on the other hand because it is exactly there where the hot spots of visitors are expected.
“About 21 percent of London’s traders are focusing on a large number of locations related to the Olympic Games, which can only be furnished between midnight and 6 a. m.”, Michael Saunders, CEO at Bibendum, a London-based wine trading company, says about the study. “To ensure the supplies and to make everything go as smoothly as possible, we need to cooperate with our clients in an intelligent and effective manner.”
So, the study also mentions the problems with the access roads. About 63 percent of the usual transport routes must be done via alternative routes most of whom are essentially longer and which can be locked when cases of emergency occur or the crowd needs to be rerouted. “The challenge is large but we will approach and manage it”, Michael Saunders reassures.
