FRANCE (Épernay) - The AREV (Assemblea delle Regioni Europee del Vino) is a kind of "European Parliament of vines and the wine". The union has 70 wine regions as members, which serve as consultants to the government. During the assembly in Epernay (France) in October, elections for the new executive board and chairman of the so-called "professional European wine council (CEPV)" were held.

Piemontese Claudio Rosso (currently also President of the Consorzios of Piemontese Appellations Barlo, Barbaresco and Vini d´Alba) was unanimously elected chairman; he is following into the German Dr. Reinhard Muth's steps.

The newly elected Claudio Rosso said after his election: "I am very glad that the Piemont is now playing an important role and I would like to thank the assessor Mino Taricco, who greatly supported me in running for this position".

The 2-day-long debate further lead to the result that the reform recommended by Mariann Fischer BoelBoel, the OCM (Joint organization of the wine market) should be reconsidered. Rosso said about this: "We cannot do without a reform of the planting guidelines. Furthermore, we have to work against the trend of industrial groups by supporting the small and middle-class companies, because it is them who are the foundation of the solid development of every wine region".
