Ulrich Franzen’s commitment resulted in recultivating fallow ground in Calmont (logo: Franzen wine estate)

GERMANY (Bremm) - The message quickly made the rounds a few weeks ago. Ulrich Franzen from Bremm at the Mosel Mosel River was killed in the vineyard on June 22nd, but not in the extreme steep slopes of Calmont, but on the other side of the MoselRiver, in the flat terrain. His vineyard tractor tipped over while sprinkling. The 54-year-old crashed on a vineyard post, which pierced his heart. Relief efforts which were carried out quickly were unsuccessful.

With Franzen gone, the wine world lost a cosmopolitan and committed winemaker, who contributed a lot through new labor-intensive plantings so that the wasteland in Calmont was brought back into production. He campaigned for the construction of a monorail (German “Monorackbahn”), which masters all differences in heights and all types of cross-country treads, and climbing trails, which make it easier to cultivate the land. The widow Iris Franzen, who has worked intensively on the eight acres of the estate, has meanwhile declared: “We will continue according to Ulrich’s principles.”

Despite the severe loss, she is pleased with the versatile support from friends and colleagues, who now stand by her in the labor-intensive growth period. The eldest son Kilian (23), currently studying in his second semester in Geisenheim, will probably succeed his father and can thereby count on his siblings Max (19) and Verena (20), who is studying business administration.
