AUSTRIA (Purbach) – The idea that wine lovers can rent vine stocks from vintagers and then over a certain time period receive a bottle of wine from “their” vine stocks is nothing new. In the Burgenland town of Purbach along the Neusiedler lake, interested hobby vintagers can “rent” about 100 vine plants for the season, however, for €800. It is worth it, however. Vintagers from the area, among them well-known names like Birgit Braunstein and Reinhold Schwarz, accompany the “leasers” through the whole year and for six Saturdays give them useful lessons in vine economy, leaf work, as well as picking and cellar economy.

After the bottles are filled, the leasers receive a liquid “payment” in form of 100 bottles, red classic, red in barrique and white, each with a label of the “winemaker”. Also included in the “viticultural curriculum” are tastings with culinary meals in the wineries.

The Purbach citizens first came up with this idea in 2002. Since then, every year there has been many many wine lovers taking part in this program; there is a maximum of 50 people. Those who would like to take part in the vintage of 2010, have to act quickly, since the next season will start on March 13, 2010. Detailed information can be obtained from the City Marketing Purbach, Tel. +43..., registrations also possible on the website www.weinerlebnis.info. (r.knoll)
