The Tuscan winery went even a step further and implemented the Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) with the 2006 Masseto and 2007 Ornellaia for all bottles -except those that were meant for the United States and Canada. This system has two functions: On the one hand it enables the sales of the bottles to be retraced so that possible black market activities can be avoided and on the other hand the authenticity of the wines is guaranteed and forgeries are prevented.

The RFID system consists of a small electronic chip (TAG), which is integrated into the rear label as well as the shipper. Every label receives an individual identification number, which is connected to the electronic parts of the label machine and the shipping gates. This way, information between the chip and the customer or shipping database can be stored and retraced. The RFID number is clearly visible on the rear label of the bottle.
If this system turns out to be successful, the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia will use this system for the whole production of both 2008 Ornellaia and 2007 Masseto (including those going to the United States and Canada).
This significant investment proves the sensibility of the winery in terms of wine counterfeits an shows the wish for protection for both jewels, the Masseto and Ornellaia. We think: worth copying. (aw.yoopress)
