GERMANY (Berlin) - The second glass was filled with a noticeably brighter, cherry-red wine that also smells a little like Christmas. Cloves, but not like in mulled wine that makes some wines undrinkable. Clove and black cherries, blackthorns, blackberries and some gingerbread. On the palate, you fell an almost transparent, acid-driven style. Woody, astringent, bitter-, with a sweet touch at the end. Some pickled plums. This is the ‘Gestad’ from the Markgräflerland.

Hans-Peter Ziereisen’s Syrah has become a constant in the German wine trade. People want more new wines. But many will have a tough time with this one. Because drunken young, the Gestad is a difficult wine. And yet a recommendation. For it will mature fabulously, just like anything by Ziereisen, what I’ve drunk in the last couple of years. And it is a rather slender, juicy Syrah that will already be the perfect wine for lamb meat from the charcoal grill in this summer.

The “Gestad” is an aromatic exciting thirst quencher for pungent and spicy food. And it is the antidote to the powerful and often sweet Syrah wines from overseas. Basically, it also reminds of older Côte-Rôties wines from Guigal. Like the great 1983 that the Maat treats himself to his birthday from time to time. Even those are not rich, extracted wines, but the ones characterized by acid and tannin and a trace of morbid fruit. (felix.eschenauer - cptn.cork)
