Archaeologists find a 1400-year-old winepress in Southern Israel within a large excavation field

ISRAEL (Jerusalem) – Within excavations in Southern Israel, an old Byzantine winepress was found. According to the archaeologists, this is a very strangely shaped winepress, which is thought to be 1400 years old. According to the authorities, the press was found to be 16,45 x 6,40 meters in Southern Israel, about 40 kilometers from Jerusalem.

“The size of the winepress shows that it must have been used to produce huge amounts of wine and it also proves that the wine was not only supposed to be for local citizens”, says Uzi Ad, director of excavations. “The winepress we found is the most modern of those times and I assume that the wine produced with this winepress was meant for export.” Uzi Ad also assumes that the wine was exported to Egypt, or maybe even to Europe.

Israeli authorities reported that the excavation are will be protected and made accessible for the public. (james.lawrence-decanter.com-aw.yoopress / translator cs)
