International Prize for the Silvaner Forum 2009

GERMANY (Alzey) - It was 350 years ago that the Silvaner was first mentioned in a document. This year, the wine scene is celebrating this Silvaner-anniversary (we reported repeatedly). Among the Silvaner highlights of the year is also the competition around the "International Prize for the Silvaner Forum". Those who would like to take part as producers will now have to hurry up. Application deadline is June 30th 2009.

The goal of the Silvaner competition is supporting and strengthening the awareness for the Silvaner with excellent wines and to show the huge potential of the Silvaner. The Silvaner Forum e. V. (registered association) is organizing the competition.

Silvaner wines from all around the world can apply at the internationally established competition. The international horizon is not by chance, after all, besides the big Silvaner country Germany, there is also Silvaner wines in France (Alsace), Switzerland (Wallis), Austria (Styria), Italy (South Tyrol), Czechia, Hungaria, Rumania or in South Africa.

There will be a category of three wines at the tasting of the competing wines, which will make it easier to differentiate between the different Silvaner types.

  • Category "Basic": light, fresh, uncomplicated Silvaner (dry)
  • Category "Premium" : high-class, strong, individual Silvaner (dry)
  • Category "Nobel" : tender, sweet dessert wines

Silvaners from the vintages 2008, 2007 and 2006 can take part in this competition. The rating of the wines will be the job of a jury consisting of oenologists, sommeliers, vintagers and wine journalists.

The prize giving ceremony will take place in the Würzburg Residence on September 10th 2009, within the International Silvaner Symposium.
